Create a litter

Record a litter in Whelpkeep — choose the state, pick the dam and sire, enter the mating and whelp dates, and start the per-litter checklist.

A litter is the heart of Whelpkeep: one mating, recorded under one state. The state and the whelp date you enter here set every deadline that follows.

Before you start

Add the dam (and the sire, if you have one) under Sires & Dams first, so you can pick them when you create the litter.

Steps

  1. In the left menu, open Litters and click Add litter.
  2. Choose the state the litter is bred in. Whelpkeep supports NSW, VIC, QLD and SA. This decides which rules, wording and deadlines apply.
  3. Pick the dam, and a sire if you have one.
  4. Enter the mating date.
  5. Once the puppies arrive, enter the whelp date.
  6. Click Save.

Note — The whelp date is the most important date in Whelpkeep. It sets your legal deadlines and the go-home date — the earliest a pup may leave, which is the whelp date plus eight weeks (the legal minimum).

What happens next

When you save, Whelpkeep gives the litter a checklist for its state. The checklist ticks itself off as your records and dates land, so you can see at a glance what's still outstanding.

Tip — You don't need the whelp date to create the litter. Record the mating now and add the whelp date when the pups are born.

Next

Now add pups to the litter. To make sure your deadlines track correctly, also set up compliance. For every field, see the Litters reference.
